IVF Treatment Cost in India: What you should know?

Advances in medical technologies and fertility treatments have come a long way, and they are working wonders in the lives of infertile couples who have been trying to conceive for years. According to studies, about 8 million IVF babies are born each year in India, and over 2 million Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) procedures are performed.

The demand for these therapies is increasing in India due to the rising success rates of IVF. However, when a couple decides to undertake IVF therapy in India, one of the first questions that comes to mind is, "How much does IVF treatment cost?"

Goral Gandhi, a prominent figure in the Indian Medical fraternity, further shares her perspectives in the same context

As per her, "Cost is determined by three factors: first, the implications of diagnosed infertility (low, medium, and high), that also defines the second factor, 'treatment method,' which ranges from simple (IUI) to precise (ICSI/IVF, Laparo/Hysteroscopy, assisted Hatching) to complex (surrogacy), and third, the number of cycles to conceive a healthy baby,"

"Some lucky couples may have success with IUI on their first try, which costs only Rs 8,000," Dr Goral Gandhi Mumbai says. "However, some couples with medium to high complexity may need to go for IVF and a lot of rounds, which costs Rs 1.5 lakhs per IVF cycle," she adds.

How much does IVF treatment cost?

In India, the cost of IVF therapy is usually between Rs 60,000 and Rs 80,000, including drugs. Still, due to the requirement for multiple rounds of IVF cycles, the same figure may reach to Rs 5 lakh.

"There is a last option of surrogacy costing Rs 10-15 lakh until the desire of a child is accomplished," Dr Goral gandhi says about couples who have minimal chance of success. "Besides, diagnostic testing and medications/trigger injections are included in the normal IVF cycle cost," she says.

The cost of IVF in government hospitals

Several Government hospitals, in addition to private hospitals, provide IVF treatment in india. Goral Gandhi further adds that despite a success record of only 15% (roughly), they provide inexpensive IVF in India.

Furthermore, while government hospitals may be overcrowded, the system may be slow, and doctors may be unpleasant, the quality of care provided is adequate due to the doctors' extensive expertise. They can perform a standard IVF for around Rs 70,000 to Rs 1 lakh (inclusive of all the tests etc).

The following are some of the most common factors that influence the cost of IVF treatment:

Location

The cost of IVF treatment in India is heavily influenced by the location. This means that IVF medications in Mumbai will be significantly more expensive than IVF treatment in Meerut. Goral Gandhi affirms that due to this wide disparity in the cost of IVF treatment in India between regions, many couples choose to travel to other cities in pursuit of low-priced IVF.

Age of the woman

It is commonly assumed that a woman under the age of 35 has a better chance of becoming pregnant in the first IVF cycle than a woman over the age of 35, who may require five or more IVF cycles to conceive.

Number of IVF cycles

The more IVF cycles required, the greater the treatment cost.

Other costs

The cost of ultrasound scans and testing, the cost of donor eggs, the cost of embryo freezing, the uniqueness of your medical and fertility status, and the cost of ICSI therapy may also shoot the IVF treatment cost.

Conclusion

Goral Gandhi concludes that although the cost of IVF treatment varies from city to city in India, one should never choose a fertility clinic solely on the basis of price. Always seek out a fertility specialist with an excellent track record and a high success rate.
